First Time Kayaking in Lynchburg? A Beginner's Guide

Never been in a kayak? Perfect โ most of our customers haven't. Here's everything a first-timer needs to know before getting on the water around Lynchburg.
Where should a beginner paddle?
Start flat. Lakes and dam pools have no current, so all you're learning is the paddle stroke:
- Holliday Lake โ no motorboats, calm, shallow edges
- Monacan Park's pool above Reusens Dam โ lake-style paddling ten minutes from downtown
- Otter Lake on the Blue Ridge Parkway โ small and serene
Feeling steadier? The Percival's Island float is the classic easy river step-up.
What to wear
Summer paddling in Virginia is forgiving: quick-dry shorts, a shirt you don't mind splashing, and shoes that can get wet (old sneakers or straps โ flip-flops end up on the bottom of the James). Bring sunscreen; water doubles the sun.
A life jacket is non-negotiable โ every rental includes a Coast-Guard-approved PFD sized for you, kids' sizes on request.
What to bring
- Water bottle (one per person)
- Dry bag for phone and keys โ included with every rental
- Snacks; gravel bars were made for them
- A hat with a brim
How the rental actually works
- Pick a launch point and pickup point on our map โ anywhere within about an hour of Lynchburg.
- Choose your boat: single, tandem, or stand-up paddleboard, half or full day.
- Pay online (Apple Pay and Google Pay work). We shuttle you to the water, and we're waiting at your take-out with cold water and dry towels.
No roof racks, no gear to buy, no experience required.
One local tip
Afternoon thunderstorms build fast over the Blue Ridge in July and August. Book a morning slot โ the water's calmer, the light's better, and you'll be eating lunch on a gravel bar while everyone else checks the radar.
