Paddling the Blue Ridge Parkway — Otter Lake & Abbott Lake Guide

America's favorite drive hides two of Central Virginia's prettiest paddles. Both Otter Lake and Abbott Lake sit right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, less than 45 minutes from downtown Lynchburg — and both are made for slow, quiet mornings on glassy water.

Otter Lake — milepost 63

At the bottom of the Parkway's descent to the James River, Otter Lake is a narrow, tree-ringed pool fed by Little Otter Creek. Mist hangs on it most mornings until nine.

  • Best for: sunrise paddles, photography, fly fishermen in float position
  • Water: dead calm; ideal for SUPs
  • Season: spring through fall (the Parkway section here rarely closes)

There's a small pull-off and easy bank access. Our shuttle handles boat drop-off and pickup, so you can paddle one way along the shoreline and walk the Otter Lake loop trail after.

Abbott Lake — Peaks of Otter, milepost 86

The postcard: a 24-acre lake sitting directly under the cone of Sharp Top mountain. Paddling here feels like floating inside a landscape painting, and fall color season is genuinely spectacular.

  • Best for: families, picnic paddles, leaf-peeping from the water
  • Water: flat, with a grassy shoreline and the Peaks of Otter Lodge on one bank
  • After the paddle: the 1.5-mile lakeshore loop is stroller-flat, and Sharp Top's summit trail leaves from across the road

Know before you go

  • Both lakes are paddle-only friendly — no gas motors, so the quiet is real.
  • Life jackets are required; every one of our rentals includes one.
  • Cell service is spotty on the Parkway. Download maps before you leave Lynchburg — or let our shuttle do the driving so you don't need them.

Make it a day

Pair Otter Lake at sunrise with the James River float in the afternoon, or keep it all mountain: Abbott Lake paddle, lodge lunch, Sharp Top hike. Either way, book your boat and we'll meet you up there.
