The Gorge — Kayaking Balcony Falls, the James River's Wildest Stretch Near Lynchburg

Most of what we rent boats for is lazy water. This is the other thing.
The run
Glasgow / Locher Landing → Snowden Landing: 4.5 miles where the James cuts straight through the Blue Ridge. The river narrows, the mountains close in, and the gradient picks up into sustained Class II rapids with Class III at Balcony Falls — the biggest named drop between here and the ocean-bound flatwater.
It is, mile for mile, the most scenic stretch of river we serve. It is also the only one with real consequences.
Who should run it
Experienced paddlers only — that's a hard line, not marketing caution. You should already be comfortable reading water, catching eddies, and self-rescuing in current. No kids under 14. If your whitewater résumé is "the riffles on the downtown float," do the Classic a few more times first and come back.
Water levels matter here
The sweet spot is roughly 2.5–4 ft on the Buchanan gauge. Below that it's bony and technical; above it, Balcony Falls stops being playful. Check with us on levels before you book — we watch the gauge and we'd rather move your trip than have you swim it.
The dam rule
Take out at Snowden Landing. Every time. No exceptions. Snowden Dam sits immediately downstream of the ramp — never miss the take-out, and never launch below it. While we're at it: the James's other lowhead dams (Scott's Mill at Percival's Island, Reusens, Holcomb Rock) all follow the same law — portage always, never paddle over or near the boil. Lowhead dams kill strong swimmers wearing PFDs. Full safety rundown on our safety page.
Booking it
The Gorge books as a full-day single kayak ($69) — tandems and SUPs stay home for this one. Gear, PFD, and shuttle to Locher Landing included through the booking map. Tell the river guide chat your experience level honestly; it'll tell you honestly whether this is your trip.
After the take-out
You've earned real food. It's a pretty drive back toward Lynchburg — hit the Bluffwalk and celebrate at The Water Dog with the other people who smell like river.
