James River Float Trips
The James at Lynchburg is wide, shallow, and full of easy Class I riffles โ one of Virginia's best float rivers. We rent the boats, run the shuttle, and point you at the right stretch for your crew and your schedule.

The floats, by time available
Got an hour? The Downtown Quickie runs Percival's Island to Riveredge Park โ about 2 river miles. Half a day? The Classic covers roughly 6 miles from the 7th Street ramp to Six Mile Bridge in 2.5โ3.5 hours at summer flows, with herons, ledges, and skyline views. A full morning? The Long Classic is the official VA DWR float: 9.9 miles from Riveredge Park to the Joshua Falls canoe slide.
Know before you launch
Passing Percival's Island at the start of any downtown float, stay on the LEFT bank โ Scott's Mill lowhead dam sits on the right side of the island, and lowhead dams are never safe to paddle. Life jackets stay on, and after heavy rain the James rises fast; if conditions turn, we call you before your trip and help rebook.
For experienced paddlers: the Gorge
Downstream at Glasgow, the James cuts through the Blue Ridge in a 4.5-mile gorge run from Locher Landing to Snowden Landing โ Class II rapids with Class III at Balcony Falls. Experienced paddlers only, no kids under 14, and check levels with us first (the sweet spot is roughly 2.5โ4 ft on the Buchanan gauge). Always take out at Snowden โ Snowden Dam is immediately downstream.
