Kayaking Near the University of Lynchburg โ€” Blackwater Creek & Beyond

The University of Lynchburg might be the best-placed campus in Virginia for paddlers โ€” Blackwater Creek's flatwater is practically across the street, and the James River is ten minutes down the hill.

Your closest water

  • Blackwater Creek @ Hollins Mill โ€” about 5 minutes from campus. Shady, calm, beneath the bluffs; the easiest first paddle in town and a quiet study-break reset.
  • Percival's Island / 7th St Ramp โ€” ~10 minutes. Gateway to the James River floats: the hour-long Downtown Quickie or the classic Six Mile run.
  • Riveredge Park โ€” ~10 minutes, across the river in Madison Heights; start of the 9.9-mile official DWR float for a full-morning mission.

Trips that fit a college schedule

An afternoon lab gap fits the Downtown Quickie (about an hour of floating plus shuttle). A free Saturday fits The Classic โ€” six river miles, riffles, herons, and downtown skyline views, then food on the Bluffwalk. Intramural-competitive friend group? Two tandems, race format, loser buys at The Water Dog.

Split the cost

Tandems are $69 a half-day โ€” $34.50 a person. Singles $49. Every rental includes paddle, life jacket, dry bag, and our door-to-water shuttle, so nobody needs a truck.

Clubs, teams & res life

Group bookings are easy (adjust boat count at checkout) and we can hold fleet for campus events โ€” chat with the river guide or call (434) 555-0199. Outdoor rec planners: the safety briefing doubles as a ready-made pre-trip checklist for your group.

Read first

The beginner's guide covers gear and what to wear; the Percival's Island guide covers the classic float including the stay-left rule at the island. Live river conditions are always on the homepage.
